Background

Old Route 17 Highway in New York was in poor condition and required re-stabilization. Furthermore, the Redhouse Bridge that carries Old Route 17 over the Allegheny River was slated for replacement to meet safety standards. NYDOT contacted Ferguson Waterworks for American-made road stabilization solutions. In total, nearly 5.7 miles of the former Route 17 needed replacement.

How did Ferguson Waterworks help New York's Old Route 17 and Redhouse Bridge Meet NYDOT safety standards?

After assessment, the team planned to scrape down the base of Old Route 17 to incorporate a new geogrid for road stabilization. In addition to shipping 99,502 square yards of Tensar HX165 Geogrid, Ferguson Waterworks also supplied over 1000 gabion baskets for the bridge rehabilitation project.  In addition, Maccaferri Gabions were utilized.

All stabilization products were American-made and per NYDOT specifications.

Product Advantages

In short, geogrid stabilized the roadbed and prolonged its life. Meanwhile, the gabion baskets added rugged stability to the new bridge.

Tensar HX165 Geogrids:

  • Both stabilize soft subgrades and also improve pavement performance
  • Optimize the interlock of fill material creating an efficient base layer
  • Require less fill material which reduces overall project costs
