Background
The municipality of Cape Coral is known for its large canal network and both fresh and saltwater preserves. These waterways are part of the Caloosahatchee Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP). The BMAP is a framework for water quality restoration that is facilitated by local and state agencies.
Due to the proximity of residential homes to nearby canal systems, Cape Coral was tasked with removing nitrogen and phosphorus from stormwater runoff. Upon receiving a grant for the project, the city had to decide on a reliable application suitable for residential property. Furthermore, the solution needed to fulfill the strict 2024 TMDLs and ERPs per the Florida Statewide Stormwater Rule.
Challenge
To sum it up, our goal was to develop a stormwater solution to effectively and reliably remove nutrients from stormwater runoff to meet TMDLs. Because Cape Coral is a coastal city in Florida with an abundance of nearby waterways, meeting the Statewide Stormwater Rule for nutrient levels in runoff is important to protect water quality and delicate coastal ecosystems. As a result, targeting phosphorus and nitrogen specifically was a key requirement of the biofiltration solution.
Solution
Teaming up with Environmental Conservation Solutions and Cape Coral’s engineering department, we explored the benefits of and proposed integrating Bold and Gold Filtration Media into residential swales.
Product Advantages
This biofiltration product provides an innovative solution for removing nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff.
Additional advantages of Bold and Gold Filtration Media:
- Bold & Gold® removes dissolved nutrients and particulates from stormwater, agricultural, and wastewater runoff.
- It is a long-lasting product that does not contain any organic materials. In fact, it is made with natural and recycled materials that are non-toxic and environmentally safe. As a result, pollutants are not discharged back into the environment.
Method
In order to effectively treat the stormwater runoff, we deployed a 1′ layer of Bold and Gold CTS Media in residential swales, covering it with native soil and sod. As a result, stormwater collects in the swales and is then filtered through the nitrogen- and phosphorus-removing media before reaching groundwater.
