Project Overview
The Eagles Canyon Raceway was constructed in the mid-1980s. Recently, new ownership desired to reconstruct a section of the aging pavement system. In addition, they wanted to add turns and length to the formula-one type track. The raceway was constructed over expansive soils. As a result, causing visual signs of distress. Furthermore, groundwater seepage, due to shallow bedrock, was also discovered in many areas. Overall, this impacted the pavement’s performance.
Challenge
Provide a long-term solution to address severe pavement cracking and distress caused by saturated soils and groundwater seepage. In addition, site conditions including numerous curves and elevations, required creative and flexible solutions.
Solutions
The original pavement design consisted of a cement-stabilized subgrade to treat the existing subgrade with CBR=1.5%. Furthermore, it included 8 inches of flexible and 4 inches of asphalt. Since the constructibility of the cement-stabilized base during saturated conditions would be problematic, the project team started by considering alternate stabilization and water management solutions. As a result, they determined a high-strength geotextile would both accommodate the difficult conditions as well as speed up the construction schedule since no cure time is required. Ultimately, Mirafi H2Ri was selected for the project because of its superior moisture management and high-strength performance.
Why did Ferguson Waterworks recommend Mirafi H2Ri Pavement Solutions for the Eagles Canyon Raceway project?
Because Mirafi H2Ri offers proven success and performance, we were able to forgo a more expensive and invasive groundwater drainage system. In fact, the Mirafi H2Ri moisture management solution provides long-term dependability when it comes to keeping groundwater out of pavement. Furthermore, new cement and additional subgrade stabilization products were unnecessary.
Ferguson Waterworks offers premium, flexible, and project-specific pavement solutions.
Overall, the combination of Mirafi H2Ri and a geosynthetic reinforced pavement provided both mechanical stabilization (through friction) and hydraulic stabilization (through lateral drainage). All the while the track remained the same thickness. Contact our team today for expert solutions, competitive prices, and fast turnarounds.
