Project Overview

The Union Pacific Railroad Spring Slope Protection Project addressed the eroding embankment on the east side of the train tracks. Ongoing erosion and sheet flow were washing soil into the train tracks and ballasts.

In situ, the site’s soil consisted of hard clays with little to no organic matter. The 2:1 slope was not stabilized and showed significant signs of reeling and erosion.

Challenge

Sustain long-term stabilization and vegetation on the steep slope/embankment on the UPRR tracks despite the poor soil conditions. Furthermore, the project called for 6” of imported fill to be laid on the 2:1 slope. However, the exposed soil was subject to washing out upon the next rainfall. The goal was to contain the imported fill, meanwhile, mitigating soil loss until adequately vegetated.

Once the natural hillside was stabilized, a soil test assessed the organic conditions of the on-site material. The soil’s organic content was shallow, therefore, an erosion control solution would be required to protect the slope during/after construction.

How did Ferguson Waterworks confine the topsoil and promote fast vegetation growth using geotextiles?

In an effort to confine the imported topsoil, 6” Presto GEOWEB® was stretched downslope on top of a nonwoven geotextile fabric. The geotextile improved drainage and material separation. Next, ProGanics® DUAL was hydraulically applied as a single-step solution to optimize soil conditions meanwhile providing high-performance erosion control and protection from near-storm events.

Case studies - results from installing permeable paving & machine technology to get an abandoned site and parking lot up to stormwater code

In order to revitalize and meet stormwater codes, the abandoned parking area at the Shoppes at Fashion Square in Orlando, FL, required updates. With a permeable paving system and machine technology, we helped the client achieve their goals, save $1 million, and complete the project in just 10 days.

ShearForce 10 installed beneath and around operational solar panels in order to prevent erosion.

With solar panels in place and operational, an immediate and effective erosion control solution was imperative. Especially considering the panels were positioned next to channels, drip lines, and spillways.
