Pecan & Gutenberg Solar Farms Require Immediate Erosion Control
With solar panels in place and operational, an immediate and effective erosion control solution was imperative. Especially considering the panels were positioned next to channels, drip lines, and spillways.
Challenge
In Roanoke Rapids, VA the Pecan and Gutenberg solar farms have solar panels positioned next to and above channels, drip lines, and emergency spillways. As a result of their placement, preventing erosion and sediment runoff was both pertinent and tricky.
Nansemond Contractors of Suffolk, VA were tasked with maintaining the site. Originally, concrete block mats were specified for installation in order to address the threat of erosion. However, Nansemond Contractors identified several issues with that approach. First and foremost being that machinery is required for installing concrete blocks. Since the solar panels were already operational, it would be difficult to maneuver large equipment between and under the panels without damaging them.
To help determine a reliable and less risky erosion control solution, the contractors turned to Ferguson Waterworks, formerly ACF Environmental. Because Nansemond had teamed up with Ferguson on several projects, they knew our robust, innovative, and reliable product offering paired with on-site support would result in a successful outcome.
Solution
In order to permanently stabilize channels, drip lines, and emergency spillways without using machinery, we recommended ShearForce 10. Not only does ShearForce permanently reinforce soils, but it also facilitates grass growth in high-flow applications. To top it off, this approach is a fraction of the cost of concrete block mats, bringing our solution under budget.
Product Advantages
ShearForce 10 has a multitude of benefits. Here are a few:
- It provides immediate protection from erosion and requires no machinery to install
- Offers comparable, maintenance-free protection at half the cost of rip rap and concrete block mats
- Promotes and permanently reinforces natural vegetation
