Challenge

When new gas stations are built, it’s not uncommon to lack permeable space for stormwater drainage or storage. The new Wawa gas station in Charlottesville, Virginia was no exception. In fact, the site was almost 100% built and unfortunately, there was no room for Kimley Horn’s engineers to utilize an above-ground retention pond. Alternatively, they selected the R-Tank for underground stormwater storage. This innovative stormwater solution alleviated the impervious surface area, allowing this site to meet the stormwater requirements. With the assistance of Ferguson Waterworks, the team assembled R-Tank HD units on site. Now, the gas station has 7000 ft3 of storage below the travel lane.

Solution

The R-Tank underground stormwater storage vessel is a great solution for sites with limited space. Ferguson specialists worked with a design engineer from Kimley Horn, using our R-Tank Tool to assist with the design. Then, we also helped the site contractor assemble and install the R-Tank units.

Product Advantages

  • Space efficient
  • Modular flexibility
  • Ease of installation
  • Small footprint
  • High capacity and high strength
  • Intuitive R-Tank Design Tool

Case studies - results from installing permeable paving & machine technology to get an abandoned site and parking lot up to stormwater code

In order to revitalize and meet stormwater codes, the abandoned parking area at the Shoppes at Fashion Square in Orlando, FL, required updates. With a permeable paving system and machine technology, we helped the client achieve their goals, save $1 million, and complete the project in just 10 days.

ShearForce 10 installed beneath and around operational solar panels in order to prevent erosion.

With solar panels in place and operational, an immediate and effective erosion control solution was imperative. Especially considering the panels were positioned next to channels, drip lines, and spillways.
